Pathological Lol as Emotional Containment
Risus textus armatus
Clinical description

Patient has deployed 'lol' at the end of sentences containing genuine distress for approximately 11 years. 'I think I am being let go lol.' 'My mom biopsy is tomorrow lol.' 'I have not been okay in a while lol.' The 'lol' is, at this point, a structural component. Removing it would require a vulnerability that has, so far, not been scheduled.

Prognosis

Chronic. 'Lol' now appears on distressing events automatically.

Recommended treatment

None. The laugh has not been heard in years.

What is this?

Patients diagnosed with Pathological Lol as Emotional Containment present with a cluster of recognizable behaviors we have, on reflection, decided to name. The condition is fictional. The behaviors, unfortunately, are not. Someone in your life is showing at least two of them right now.

The Institute's taxonomic entry lists it as Risus textus armatus, a binomial coined in-house and used nowhere in the peer-reviewed literature.
